Types of carpet cushion
Carpet underlay (cushion - pad) is a critical aspect of your carpet installation. It is important to ensure a type and quality of underlay that works with your choice of carpet, wear requirements, and installation type. In addition to providing much needed cushion for your carpet allowing it to perform to it's fullest potential; carpet underlay also provides comfort, sound and heat insulation. Always buy carpet cushion that conforms to air quality standards as outlined in CRI Certification Standards. (Look for the little green house logo).

Rebond - One of the most widely used types of carpet cushion
Rebond underlay which is made from recycled foam - mainly scraps leftover from automobile seats and the furniture industry and is then "re-bonded" into carpet cushion. It is a light weight underlay and a comfortable option for carpeting plus has great insulation properties. This type of underlay is typical for most residential projects and available in various weights and thicknesses up to 1/2". It is recommended that you use at least a 7Lb - 3/8" product for durability and comfort. Rebond is available in weights up to 10Lb. where premium cushion wear and insulation is desired.

Felt underlay is a great choice for heavy traffic residential and most especially heavy commercial areas such as pubs, hotels, retail, etc. Felt is extremely durable and is very good for sound and heat insulation. In addition, felt underlay will allow moisture to dissipate as it "breathes" much more than rubber or foam products. It will however provide quite a firm feel and will not give the comfort you may find in other types of cushion.
